My response to people thinking the ‘rape’ with Laura Croft is no big deal.
It is a big deal because it’s unnecessary. She’s already had to deal with combat, grueling physical tasks, and the kidnapping of her close friend. Those events, and the reasons behind them, should be enough for people to accept her as a credible strong female character. But no, apprantly the creators, and those commenters, believe she can only be strong if attempted rape occurs. Yes, she does defend herself and kick-ass in the process, but it’s the simple fact people think rape is necessary for her to a strong female lead.
Elena and Chloe from Uncharted; Jane Shepard, Tali, Jack (for Chirt’s sake, Mass Effect pretty much had free reign to do that to her, but they didn’t!) Miranda, and Dr. Chakwas from Mass Effect; Lucy from Assassin’s Creed; Any Final Fantasy series female lead; Female Dragonborn from Skyrim; Female lead in Fallout series; and countless other strong female leads from video games did not require rape to justify their disposition so Laura Croft certainly doesn’t.
